The Gourmet Island of the Cyclades
Sifnos has a quiet confidence about it. It's not the flashiest Cycladic island, nor the most famous — but those who visit tend to come back. The island is famous across Greece for two things: its outstanding food tradition (it produced Greece's first celebrated cookery writer, Nikolaos Tselementes) and its handmade pottery, which has been crafted here since ancient times.
Visually, Sifnos is classic Cyclades: whitewashed cubic houses draped in bougainvillea, windmills on the hilltops, blue-domed chapels, and a coastline that alternates between sandy beaches and dramatic rocky capes.
Top Spots
- Kastro: The medieval fortified village perched on a sea cliff on the east coast — a maze of vaulted passageways, ancient churches, and dramatic sea views. One of the most atmospheric villages in the Cyclades.
- Apollonia: The island capital — a spread of interconnected whitewashed settlements across a hilltop. The pedestrian main street at dusk, lined with pottery shops and cafés, is the social heart of the island.
- Chrissopigi Monastery: A 17th-century monastery perched on a rocky promontory connected to the coast by a narrow bridge — one of Sifnos's most iconic images.
- Vathi Bay: A deep, sheltered bay with a perfect sandy beach and a handful of excellent seafood restaurants — one of the most beautiful anchorages in the Cyclades.
- Faros: A quiet cluster of small beaches on the southeast coast, with excellent snorkelling and a traditional fishing harbour feel.
Food & Pottery
Sifnos's food culture is genuine and proud. The island speciality is revithada — slow-cooked chickpeas in clay pots, traditionally prepared overnight in the village baker's wood oven. Every taverna serves a version; Vathi and Faros have some of the best. Pottery workshops in Kamares are open to visitors and sell beautiful handmade pieces at reasonable prices.
Practical Tips
- Ferry from Piraeus takes about 2 hours on the fast boat; also connects easily to Serifos and Milos.
- The island's bus network is surprisingly good for the Cyclades — connects all main villages.
- Kamares (the port) and Apollonia are the best bases for accommodation.
- Book restaurants in Vathi in advance during summer — they fill quickly.
