Greece's Wild, Secret Island
Samothraki is unlike any other Greek island. There are no sandy beaches, no package tourists, and no airport — access is only by ferry from Alexandroupoli on the northern mainland, which means only those who truly seek it out arrive. What they find is a rugged, forested mountain rising steeply from the northern Aegean, laced with rushing rivers, cascading waterfalls, and crystalline natural swimming pools that look more like a sub-tropical rainforest than a Greek island.
The island was one of the most sacred places in the ancient world — home to the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, the mystery cult site where the Winged Victory of Samothrace (now in the Louvre) was discovered. That sense of ancient power still clings to the place.
Top Spots
- Fonias Waterfalls & Rock Pools: A 45-minute walk up the Fonias River gorge leads to a series of natural rock pools fed by a 12m waterfall. Swimming here in cold, crystal-clear water surrounded by forest is one of Greece's most extraordinary experiences.
- Therma (Loutra): The main settlement in the north, famous for its therapeutic hot springs — outdoor thermal pools where you can soak in geothermal water year-round. A surreal experience in a forested gorge.
- Sanctuary of the Great Gods: The ancient mystery sanctuary where the Nike of Samothrace was found — now a remarkably atmospheric archaeological site with substantial standing remains and an excellent museum.
- Mount Fengari (1611m): The highest peak in the Aegean, said to be where Poseidon watched the Trojan War. Climbing it (4–5 hours return from Therma) rewards with views across to Turkey and Bulgaria on a clear day.
- Chora: The medieval hilltop capital — a photogenic castle town with Byzantine-era fortifications and sweeping coastal views.
Photography Tips
Samothraki's primary subjects are water and forest. Long-exposure shots of the Fonias waterfall and pools in early morning light (before other visitors arrive) are the island's signature images. The ancient sanctuary is extraordinary at dusk when the low light picks out the texture of the stonework. Mount Fengari at sunrise, if you've camped near the summit, produces one of the most dramatic panoramas in the Aegean.
Practical Tips
- Ferry from Alexandroupoli takes ~2 hours; the ferry port is at Kamariotissa on the west coast.
- A hire car is essential — the island's road network is good but distances are significant.
- Accommodation is basic but charming; Therma has the best range of guesthouses near the main activities.
- Bring cash — ATM availability is limited and card acceptance is patchy.
- The famous Samothraki World Music Festival is held in August — camping-based and draws a loyal international crowd.
