The Jewel of the Epirus Coast
Parga is one of mainland Greece's most photogenic towns — a Venetian-built coastal settlement on the Epirus coast facing the Ionian Sea, with a Norman-Venetian castle rising above a harbour lined with colourful houses, olive groves tumbling to the sea, and a string of excellent beaches within walking distance of the centre.
Unlike many Greek resorts, Parga has managed to grow its tourism offer without losing its soul. The old town retains its narrow, castle-shaded streets, the fish tavernas are genuinely local, and the surrounding landscape — forested hills, olive groves, and river gorges — is largely undeveloped.
Top Spots
- Parga Castle: The Venetian-Byzantine fortress above the town commands sweeping views over the bay, the olive-covered hills, and Paxos island on the horizon. The approach through the old town is itself photogenic.
- Valtos Beach: The main beach, a 10-minute walk from the centre over the castle hill. Long, sandy, with clear water and a backdrop of green hills.
- Lichnos Beach: A quieter, more sheltered cove south of town — one of the most beautiful beaches in the area.
- Paxos & Antipaxos: Day trips by boat to these offshore islands are easy and worthwhile. Antipaxos has some of the clearest water in the Ionian.
- Acheron River: The mythological "River of the Underworld" begins inland and flows to the sea near Parga. Kayaking or walking its gorge is a memorable half-day.
Photography Tips
The best overview shot of Parga — town, bay, castle, and Paxos in the distance — is taken from the road climbing south out of town towards Lichnos. Golden hour makes this image. The castle itself frames the bay beautifully from within its walls at any time of day.
Practical Tips
- Parga is reached by road from Ioannina (1.5 hrs) or Preveza (1 hr); the nearest airport is Aktion (PVK).
- The town is fully walkable — most beaches and the castle are on foot from the centre.
- July and August are very busy; May, June, and September offer the best mix of weather and crowds.
- Olive oil from local producers around Parga is exceptional — bring some home.
