More Than the Clubs
Ibiza has one of the most distorted reputations in travel. Yes, it's the world capital of club culture — but the island is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, home to one of the best-preserved medieval fortified old towns in the Mediterranean, a coastline of wild coves and translucent water, a thriving arts and yoga scene, and a quiet rural north that feels a world away from the Playa d'en Bossa strip.
The photographer who arrives expecting only neon and noise will be pleasantly surprised. The island's light — warm, golden, and intense — is extraordinary. The sunsets over the western coast are legendary for good reason.
Top Spots
- Dalt Vila (Old Town): The UNESCO-listed walled old town rising above Ibiza Harbour is one of the finest medieval citadels in Spain. The views from the cathedral terrace over the harbour and out to Formentera are exceptional, particularly at golden hour.
- Ses Salines Beach: The most beautiful beach on the island — a long sweep of fine sand in a protected natural park, with the famous Es Cavallet stretch alongside it. The shallow water shifts from clear to pale turquoise to deep blue.
- Cala Salada: A sheltered cove on the west coast, ringed by pine trees — the most purely beautiful small beach on Ibiza. Arrive very early or very late.
- San Juan (Sant Joan de Labritja): The quiet north. The small whitewashed church in the village square, the hippy market on Sundays, and the wild coastline of the north cape are all excellent subjects.
- Sunset at Es Vedrà: The mysterious rocky islet off the southwest coast — visible from a clifftop car park near Cala d'Hort — catches the last light of the day in a way that borders on the theatrical.
The Sunset Ritual
Ibiza's sunsets are genuinely world-class. The west-facing coastline from Café del Mar in Sant Antoni to Cala Conta is lined with people every evening from about an hour before sundown. The ritual is participatory and joyful — not just a photo opportunity but a cultural event. Cala Conta, with its flat rocks and clear water, gives the cleanest compositions.
Practical Tips
- Hire a car to reach the best beaches; many are only reachable via narrow tracks.
- The north of the island (Santa Gertrudis, San Juan, Portinatx) is quiet, beautiful, and a completely different Ibiza from the south.
- May, early June, and September–October offer warm weather, open businesses, and far fewer crowds than July–August.
- A day trip to Formentera by fast ferry (25 min from Ibiza Town) is highly recommended — the water there is among the clearest in the Mediterranean.
